story by John Rittenoure - ADA, Okla. (August 14, 2021) - Jay Sale was just one lap away from a fourth career Complete Well Testing Sooner Late Model Series victory. But Sale gave up the lead with one lap remaining and Kip Hughes was able to capitalize and drive the final lap to victory Saturday at Oklahoma Sports Park.

Hughes won for the sixth time this season and moved into the Complete Well Testing points lead for the first time this season.

Sale drove off the pole into the early lead and stayed there until lap four when Kaleb Roach took over. However, the yellow flag came out before the lap was completed putting Sale back in front for the restart.

Hughes, who started in 6th, moved into second and chased Sale for the next 20 laps. Just when it appeared Sale would hang on for the win, he gave up the front spot to Hughes for the final lap. Sale faded to fourth as Dean Abbey and Roach passed for second and third. Dustin Allen, who won his second feature of the season last week at Enid, finished 5th.

Hayden Ross, who has led the Complete Well Testing point standings since early in the season, started in 12th and worked his way to 7th behind sixth place finisher Steven Hawkins. But it was not enough to stop Hughes from overcoming an 85 point deficit and taking a 10 point lead.

About Sooner Late Model Series

The Sooner Late Model Series was formed in 2016 by Enid Speedway co-promoter Mark Brill. Brill felt there was not many opportunities for late model competitors to race in Oklahoma and the Sooner Late Model Series was formed. Now the series has grown beyond the borders of Oklahoma with events held in the neighboring states of Kansas, Texas and Arkansas as well.
