Parmley battles to Sooner Late Model victory at Tri-State

By John Rittenoure

POCOLA, Okla. (September 28, 2024) - Misfortune struck Eli Ross for the second straight night and Jack Parmley took advantage to win his second career APEX Healthcare Partners Sooner Late Model Series victory Saturday at Tri-State Speedway.

Friday night Ross led 16 laps at Thunderbird Speedway until distributor issues sidelined him. Saturday Ross roared out front on the start and was setting a strong pace until Parmley closed in. Parmley first wheeled into second on lap16 and was joined by Kip Hughes in what became a three-way race for the lead. Hughes got around Parmley for second on lap 20 only to give it back a lap later. Ross, Parmley and Hughes raced for the top spot until Ross went to high and got into the wall bringing out a yellow. On the restart Ross was done and Parmley led the final three laps for the win.

With Ross out the action continued up front as Nick Glaze drove from fourth to pass Hughes and held on for second. Hughes settled for third just 0.042 seconds behind Glaze. Mark Daye and Ryder Laplante rounded out fourth and fifth respectively.

Ross was not the only victim of the narrow high groove cushion. Friday night winner Brett Hansen moved into second on lap 2 and was running up next to the wall trying to find enough moisture to catch Ross. On lap 16 Hansen glanced off the turn three wall and fell to fourth. Hansen kept going only to bite the wall again a lap later and this time he was done.

The final APEX Healthcare Partners Sooner Late Model Series event of the season happens next Saturday, October 5, at Enid Speedway will a champion and final top 10 will be determined.

Sooner Late Model Series

The Sooner Late Model Series was formed in 2016 by Enid Speedway co-promoter Mark Brill. Brill felt there was not many opportunities for late model competitors to race in Oklahoma and the Sooner Late Model Series was formed. Now the series has grown beyond the borders of Oklahoma with events held in the neighboring states of Kansas, Texas and Arkansas.
