Gorby battles to Sooner Late Model victory at Enid
By John Rittenoure, ENID, Okla. (September 9, 2017) - Joseph Gorby stalked early leader Adam Popp then passed him with a high side move on lap 11 to win the Sooner Late Model Series feature Saturday at Enid Speedway.
It was Gorby’s first career Sooner Series victory and it came in just his third race of the season.
The race got underway with Popp jumping into the lead from his inside second row starting position after a yellow waved to force a complete restart. Points runner-up Jason Redman, who started 7th, roared into second and chased Popp from a car length back. But his chance at victory was dashed on lap 7 when he slowed on the backstretch bringing out the yellow.
On the restart Popp continued setting the pace with with Gorby taking over second. Gorby closed in on Popp’s rear bumper and finally pulled outside to challenge on lap 11. Gorby pulled ahead out of turn four and led the final 9 laps. Popp fell to third at the finish as Damian Patocha drove past on the final lap for second. Mark Harrison, who won the last two Sooner events at Enid, worked his way to fourth and Kyle Sweeney rounded out the top five.
The Sooner Series Late Models return to action next Friday with a visit to Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore.
