by John Rittenoure - MUSKOGEE, Okla. (March 26, 2021) - Joe Godsey of Edinburgh, Indiana battled past Kip Hughes after a lap 19 restart to win the first night of the CWT Sooner Late Model Series Okie Dirt Nationals on Friday at Thunderbird Speedway.
Hughes led from the start and had no challengers through most of the 25-lap race on the historic Thunderbird half-mile. Jason Redman gave chase early but soon was caught up in a battle with Hayden Ross. The two traded the runner-up spot back and forth until Godsey roared into the mix late in the race.
Godsey got around Redman and Ross and set out after Hughes. Hughes was maintaining a slim lead until the final four laps when Godsey shot underneath in turn four. Hughes swapped the lead with Godsey in turns 1-2 but Godsey took it back and raced to his first Sooner Late Model victory.
Hughes did finish second and Ross settling for third. Justin Wells charged into fourth and Clay Julian rounded out the top five.
