Hansen, Moses capture Sooner Series double features

(Maxx Ramsey photos) John Rittenoure - ENID, Okla. (September 9, 2023) - Two winners emerged from the Complete Well Testing Sooner Late Model Series on Saturday at Enid Speedway.

Series points leader Brett Hansen had to wait a month, but emerged with his sixth victory of the season the make-up feature from an August 12 when rain washed out the program after heat races. Hansen came close to scoring a daily double as he finished second to Darren Moses in the nights regularly scheduled feature.

The make-up feature was competitive from the start with pole sitter Christopher Wilhite, Jr. setting the early pace. However, Joseph Gorby drove around Wilhite for second on lap 8. But Gorby’s lead was short lived. Hansen took over on lap 10 and went the distance for his 11th career victory.

Gorby held onto second over a hard charging Jon Herring, Jr. who earned the Marks Machine Shop Hard Charger award advancing from 16th starting to third. Richard Shepler finished fourth and Gary Lowe was fifth. Early leader Wilhite fell to 8th pulling out of the race with three laps remaining with an overheating engine.

In the second feature Kansas racer Darren Moses led start-to-finish for his first Sooner Series career victory. Hansen gave chase all the way and pulled alongside for the lead on a lap 16 restart. Moses pulled back in front and Hansen settled for second at the finish. Adam Popp came from 7th to finish third, Gary Lowe was fourth and newcomer Daniel Helm rounded out the top five. Helm advanced 10 spots to earn the Marks Machine Shop Hard Charger award.
